To be eligible for a license at 16 years and 90 days, your child must complete an approved driver education course. An approved driver education course consists of the minimum 30 hours of classroom (either a traditional classroom course or an approved online course) and six hours of behind the wheel training by a licensed instructor through a licensed driver education school.
Your child must be at least 15 years old before he/she can participate in either the classroom or behind the wheel phase of driver education. You can register your child for a driver education course before he/she is 15 years old, but he/she cannot participate in driver education training until they have reached 15 years of age.
Once the student has a permit he or she can drive with the parents
To Obtain a driver’s ed permit or learners permit, a “CDE” form will be provided by the school doing the 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. Learner permits allow Indiana residents to practice driving before obtaining a driver’s license. You may obtain a learner’s permit if you are at least 15 years old and are enrolled in an approved driver education program. You must show proof of your enrollment in an approved driver education program by presenting a valid Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment from the program.THIS is the “CDE” form. You must also present documents of identification and pass a vision screening test. NOTE EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012, you will also have to pass a written test at the BMV to obtain the permit
A 50 hour driving log will also be required of all new drivers whether they take driver’s education or not. This is usually done with the parents or guardians, but any of the hours driven during a drivers ed course can be applied toward the 50 hours of logged driving. Here is the BMV link for an official copy Log of supervised driving.
Driver Education is not required to obtain an Indiana driver’s license. Without driver education your child must be 16 years old to be eligible for a permit, must complete the 50 hour driving log, and will be eligible for a license at 16 years and 270 days.
